2011 Golf Tournament Results

The Annual Kappa Mu Golf Scramble was a great success! The scramble had over 70 players and raised over $4K. A sincere thank you goes out to everyone who donated and also to Kevin Harmon and Greg Overby for once again taking time out of their schedule to put together another successful event. Thanks again.

The recent flooding in the Nashville area has affected many including some brothers. Here is a message from Chris Swafford:
I am calling on all brothers for some help. PA Lee 's parents lost their entire home during the flood and have nothing now. If you could spare some of the money you would spend on just one night of boos and strippers, it will be put to good use as they try to piece their lives back together. On January 30, 2010 we held our annual alumni meeting via a conference call.

Key notes:
-Because the meeting was held via a conference call nothing officially could be voted on, only discussed.
-Website changes are in progress - including online payments. Everything will be published through www.ttukappasigma.com so check there.
-Per Dan Johnson's request, he has stepped down as Vice President. Please welcome Richard Hunter as the new Vice President of the Alumni Association.

Group Think, Alumni Dues & Start Giving Today

Since posting the meeting agenda on January 10, the TTU Kappa Sigma Google Group has been bustling with conversation and lively debate.

Alumni Dues Options on the Floor (from feedback I have received or is posted)

Keep the golf tourney as is and have separate $25 that is collected at the Golf Tournament or Homecoming
Use $25 of the $100 fee collected at the tournament for operating expenses (and collect $25 from non-golfers at homecoming)
Split the net proceeds of the tournament between 50/50 between the scholarship fund and the operating fund

I like all of these more than raising rent or raising the tournament entry fee. Of the three, using $25 per golfer seems the most logical. The first option of adding $25 is essentially 'raising' the tournament entry fee - and would take away from any fundraising by the chapter for mulligans etc. $25 per person also keeps more than 50% of the net profit going to our scholarship fund.

I'd like for this to be a short term 'stimulus' to the operating fund. And unlike the government, all it takes is us to shift the golf tourney fees back to the scholarship fund when we get our revenues up. I would strongly support leaving everything as is IF we can get to $500 per month by the meeting (how? keep reading).

Another qualm is that, like the Apple store, it is hard to give us money. Options to give us money is the one thing that will be greatly increased by Homecoming.

In the meantime, here is all you need to start putting your money in the coffers each month, once or twice a year and some suggested giving levels. Want to keep 100% of the golf tourney going for the scholarship? Put it on a note with your monthly donation form for $10, $20 or more...nevermind the note - the completed pledge will say it all.

You can email the 'Annual / Biannual Form' but the other should be mailed to the address on the document.

Our goal is to increase our monthly revenue by $1000 by Homecoming. All it takes is a few minutes - we will do the rest. Read the following from Shaun if you are on the fence...50 brothers at that level will get us there...sign up and cheer other on...now is the time.

I would like to restate my position plainly, and soberly, that an ACH withdrawal from your checking account is by far the easiest way to give. If widely used, it will also be the most effective. 100 alumni brothers X $20.00 per month is easy math. It also makes it a lot easier to keep the house up, qualify for a refinance if needed, and hopefully retire the debt at a faster pace.

Chick-fil-a "Spirit Night"

Gentlemen,

As many of you may know, my wife (Mary Leigh) and I are looking to adopt a little boy from South Korea within the next few months (we travel in May 2010 to pick him up, we hope). All of the plans hinge on financials. The adoption agencies require a large amount of money to be set aside in a bank account or available for withdrawal by the adopters before they will proceed with some of the paperwork. We are working hard on fundraising in order to offset the large amount of money needed. Chick-fil-a has been gracious enough to allow a "spirit night" in Cookeville.

The way that this works is that we generate business (sales) for Chick-fil-a on Wednesday, December 9th during the evening hours (approximately 5 PM - 8PM) and in return, they give us 15% of the sales amount. We held one of these here in Murfreesboro and generated a few hundred dollars to benefit the fundraising efforts and every little bit helps.

I know many of you may not be in the Cookeville area, but I wanted to pass along the details to as many people as possible.

I will be there and hope everyone can make it.
An update from the chapter:
We will not be having blow ups for the kids. The blow ups are being rented for the weekend. There were talks early on of having a catered lunch after the parade. Unfortantly with the school year just getting started and with Rush this is also not going to occur.

Just wanted to try and let everyone know beforehand so no one was blindsided. Look forward to seeing everyone.

Sept. Nashville Alumni Event - It's Your Call

We are on the cusp of September and want to get in TWO more events for the Nashville alumni. We have a group going to Cookeville to show our support on September 17 for the Most Wanted Man Night of Rush at the house. In effort to get the most people, we want to get the input from those of you who'd like to come out. Blake and JT have worked hard to make sure the July & August's events went off without a hitch - so you are going to help with the planning for the September event by answering the following TWO questions - what day? what location? We'll set the time as 6-8, but you can stay out as late as you want. Get there early if you'd like. As long as you can make it.

Fall Rush

Fall is just around the corner. Football is in the air. Its that time of year again, FALL RUSH. The undergrads are currently in the process of improving the house for the start of school and rush. Unfortunately, the budget for the undergrads is really tight and are asking for help. Items that need to be repaired include:

Door going to the porch facing the FIJI house
Multiple doors around the house (holes in them)
Volleyball lighting (Need new lights, improved lighting)
New flood lights for out front
New Dishwasher (current one won’t drain, possibly just needs to be repaired)

These are the more pertinent items they would like to get repaired before Rush begins.

If anyone or everyone could send some money ($20) to the chapter c/o rush work week fund to help they would greatly appreciated. These repairs will go along way to continuing making out house the best house on campus. AEKDB

Brothers in the Nashville area will be getting together at Dave & Busters in Opry Mills this Friday, August 14 @ 7pm. We hope you can make it out. Thanks to JT and Blake Oakley, this is out second event this summer & ww are already planning one for September if you can't make it to this one. Want to know more?

Summer Party / Homecoming

Summer Party was over a month ago and I would like to thank everyone who was able to make it to Summer Party. The golf tournament raised over $3400 for the scholarship fund. The Tidwell's won for the 3rd year in a row. There was a play off for 2nd and 3rd. I would also like to thank the undergraduate chapter for doing a good job with the yard, and picking up every day.

Homecoming is October 31st. Due to other reasons, the undergrads first try at family friendly events didn't turn out as expected. They now have their focus on homecoming, and have insured me that they will have everything ready to go. More information to follow at a later date.

On a different note, a couple brothers and their significant others are planning on attending a Predator's game on December 12, 2009.

Undergrad Update

Update from the Undergrad Chapter

We had 7 brothers attend conclave in San Antonio, Texas. We again received numerous awards as the excellence of the chapter continues to rise. We received our 3rd straight FACE award as well as the George Miles Arnold Ritual Proficiency award along with many other recognitions. We are very happy with these awards and look forward to continue the Kappa Mu excellence.

Adam Poe was elected as the Area 3 UAC (Undergraduate Advisement Council). This is a huge honor as Poe will represent the entire Area (Over 45 chapters) at all SEC meetings. Congrats to Poe. We all know he will go above and beyond and serve Area 3 with pride.

We look forward to kicking off this semester with a great Week of Welcome and Rush during the 3rd week of school.

Homecoming will be on October 31st. Hope everyone can make it out for a celebration of our 40 years on campus.

PROPERTY REZONING
Update from Eric Johnson & Jon Ward

In the end we determined as an organization that rezoning to UNV from CL was the best fit with our long term plans for the house at 525 North Walnut. During the final days before the May 18 Planning meeting, Jon called to talk to James Mills, Cookeville's Planning Director. In an expected and historically typical response, James Mills stated that our property was currently a non-conforming use and would be "taken in even if they were kicking and screaming".

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the city of Cookeville and its employees, like James Mills, for treating all property owners with respect; tempering actions and statements with wisdom; and all the steps the city has taken to foster the respect it deserves.

SUMMER PARTY PLANNING
On that note, Summer Party is coming - its less than a month away! In conjunction with the planned events, we are planning special events at the house for Saturday. Matthew Parrott is working to have some family friendly fun during the day at the house - snow cones & other stuff for the kiddies. Jordan Ray has also stepped up to make one of our most time honored traditions possible. You'll have to come to the house on Saturday to find out... (this is the best cliff hanger I can come up with)

Finally, Oakley is planning a softball game for Friday night that should do well to throw off eveyone's swing for the golf tourney on Saturday - not to mention pull muscles and hyperextend things.

FRIDAY NIGHT SOFTBALL - 1st Annual Double Header

I hope this message reaches everyone before Summer Party. I have arranged a Softball double header for the Friday night of Summer Party (June 26) starting around 6:30 pm. I am currently trying to assemble an unstoppable Alumni squad that will completely embarrass the Undergrad team. Apparently, they think they have a pretty good team since they won the IFC Softball championship this past Spring. However the Alumni lineup is starting to look very very nice, but we still need to fill some holes. If you are interested in strapping up the cleats for the 1st Annual Summer Party Double Header then shoot me an email. Make sure you include the following: preferred playing position, 40 time and 12 yr. old little league batting average. If you can't recall those particular stats then we probably won't have a problem sliding you in as an extra hitter and designated beer drinker. For those of you that don't feel like you "have it" anymore then I hope you will still show up to see the old guys take them to the woodshed. I will try not to release the lineup early so our Undergrad team does not back out. Let the trash talking begin....

Rezoning Property

There is a current proposal to rezone the propert at 525 N. Walnut.

The current proposal will directly affect our property. This item is set for action on the Cookeville Planning Commission agenda for May 18, 2009. The proposal is to rezone Kappa Sigma's property to UNV, University District, along with all other properties encompassed by the red border depicted on the attached map. The current zoning for our property is CL, Local Commercial. This district is more liberal with permitted uses, including many uses permitted in the Central Business District. The UNV district will restrict some uses by right and uses on appeal (special exceptions). These uses are defined on the City of Cookeville's web site under the planning department link. Current zoning: CL, Local Commercial

Including some uses in CDB, Central Business District

Proposed zoning: UNV, University

City of Cookeville Zoning Code

The zoning classifications are controlled by the City of Cookeville, and Tennessee Tech would not have any jurisdiction on our property. The city would not care what activities take place there, so long as the police aren't involved. The UNV zoning district is designed to better accommodate university related uses.

I would not see where this would have any negative affects on our property as long as our current use continues. In the event of another catastrophe, there would be no time limits set to reconstruct a non-conforming use, as we currently have under the CL zoning classification. We would be losing some of the potential uses by right and special exceptions that we currently have under the CL zoning district.

Hope this answers some questions. Reading the zoning classifications will give everyone a better idea of how this affects the property.

Unless someone tells me different by COB Tuesday, May 12, I plan to submit that our organization is in favor of the rezoning of 525 North Walnut from CL (Commercial Local) to UNV (University).

The only concern that has been brought to my attention was "If our property is zoned UNV, does that give TTU any additional say or input as to what we can do with or at the house?". From the input I have received, the short answer is no. This zoning is at the city level. It only relates to how the property can be developed.

So, that being said. Any more concerns from anyone? Anything else we need to hash out? Any reason for either way?

Silence is acceptance. If I do not hear any nays, I am going to make a blog post announcing the previously mentioned position; explanation of 'terms; and contact information for questions (this will be me unless Ward says he will do it)

We have now surpassed the $115,000 mark for the Kappa Sigma Military Heroes Campaign, with over 150 on-line and check donations. In the last 48 hours your donations have averaged nearly $200 per donation. In my 30 years as a Kappa Sigma, I have never seen a greater show of excitement and support for our Order.

A representative from the Fisher House today, told me that he was in awe of Kappa Sigma and our fundraising ability. He wished that his college fraternity, one that each of you will recognize, could achieve the same level of giving that he is watching Kappa Sigma deliver. What an incredible compliment to you!

Word on the street is that two-time overall champion Greg “Beast” Overby is actively pursuing a replacement for Harmon. Apparently he is dissatisfied with recent results and Harmon’s unwillingness to play “hurt” last year. Sources close to the situation have quoted Beast as saying… “Harmon had never won anything without me on the team”. Those same sources have indicated the Beast has targeted legendary former TTU golfer and Kappa Mu alumni David “The Rock” Belcher as Harmon’s replacement.

Belcher- if you are reading this, we want to see you back in Cookeville this summer. However, be mindful of any offers you might receive from Beast.

Crawfish Boil 3/28

The undergraduate chapter is having a crawfish boil this weekend in conjunction with initiation and the 40th anniversary of the chapter. Due to monetary circumstances, they need an accurate headcount of the amount of people attending. If you are planning on eaten some crawdads this Saturday, please contact either Spencer Tidwell (sgtidwell21@gmail.com) or Adam Poe (adam.poe.543@gmail.com) and by Wednesday and let them know you are attending so they can reserve your spot. The chapter is asking for a minimum $15 dollar donation to help pay for the crawfish. There will be a live band (Homestead) playing while we eat outside. The Chapter has planned a big event for March!

We will be doing our first Crawfish Boil on the 28th of March following initiation. The events will include a dinner and a band. Plates (admission tickets) can be purchased at the door but right now I cannot say a definite price, probably $8-$10. We have 500 lbs of crawfish being brough up from Lousiana so its gonna be tasty.

A Crawfish Boil is more than just a dinner, it is about cooking the crawfish and the atmosphere. We want all alumni to come and enjoy this time with us. It is combined with the initation celebration and it will be a really fun time of course.

I asked them to become 'Best of Show' in a very elite group, Kappa Sigma. They have accepted this challenge and proven to be exactly that, my "Show Dogs" and I think they deserve to hear that directly from the District Grand Master.

The Alumni Association's 2009 Progress & Plans

The Alumni Association gathered at 525 North Walnut for the Annual Meeting. I've sent the minutes as taken to the officers. Once approved, I will post them on the blog and send out the link. We have some very aggressive initiatives that will be starting as soon as the minutes are approved. Communication is imperative to the success of each and every one if these - so this is a major first push to make the long term goals attainable.

I have tragic news. Ashley Martin died in a fire Thursday, February 5. According to The Daily Post-Athenian:
“…The body of Ashley Martin, 31, was recovered about 1 p.m., several hours after firefighters began extinguishing the blaze at 1360 County Road 658.
Firefighters were called to the barn at about 5 a.m. but did not suspect anyone was inside the structure, officials said. Sheriff Steve Frisbie said Martin's car was not there which led investigators to believe the barn was vacant. Martin had turned the upstairs loft of the barn into living quarters.
The fire rekindled shortly after noon, and investigators learned Martin's girlfriend had his car. A search was launched and Martin's body was found in the rubble.
Frisbie said state bomb and arson investigators were called to help, which is standard with all fatal fires.
The sheriff said there is no reason to suspect foul play…”

Kappa Mu Shines Yet Again

This past weekend the brothers of Kappa Mu, yet again, were recognized for achieving greatness. Our chapter competed against the other chapters across the state in a mach model initiation. At the banquet, Kappa Mu was awarded for our excellent display of the initiation, winning over all of the chapters in the state of Tennessee. As well, Adam Poe won the Explanatory competition making Kappa Mu the only chapter to receive any awards given by Kappa Sigma. Also, Hunter Burney, Spencer Tidwell, and David Horton were recipients of the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund Scholarship. It was an honor to have these awards given to us. Our chapter is continuing to make progress forward thanks to the example our alumni has set. The Kappa Sigma Alumni Association (KSAA) will hold the annual housing meeting at the fraternity house on January 25, 2009 at 2pm as agreed at Homecoming 2008. The agenda will be published at our interim website using the announcements.

We'd really like to increase the participation at this event due to its significance to both the chapter and the alumni association. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for the off week prior to the Super Bowl each year. The idea is everyone gets bombarded with Super Bowl info. KAPPA MU PARTICIPATES IN VANDERBILT REINSTATEMENT & TN CONCLAVE

Last weekend at Vanderbilt, the Kappa Mu Chapter successfully completed model initiation, explanatory and installation of officers for the reinstated Kappa chapter. In all, 59 guys started the re-colonization of Kappa chapter, and we believe that the chapter there will be in good hands. This was the fourth installation that Kappa Mu has been invited to since 2006. At each of these, Kappa Mu was honored with the request to conduct model initiation.

TN Conclave - January 24 & 25

This coming weekend, our chapter will compete in a ritual competition, with the winner to do model initiation at Grand Conclave in San Antonio, TX this summer.

The team competing will be as follows:
Matt Hensley and James Newsom, Jacob Wilson, Phillip Stephens, Ryan Ogletree, Hunter Burney, and Adam Poe. As well, Adam Poe will compete in an additional individual section of the competition. The goal is to follow precedence and come out on top. The hard work and dedication of these brothers continues to raise expectations and standards of the Kappa Mu chapter's ritual program and involvement. The weekend's main objective is to set a roadmap for the all Tennessee chapters to follow in 2009.

In Scholarship news, our GPA rose almost two tenths of a point overall this past fall.

2009 - Our Chapter's 40th Anniversary

We plan to celebrate the chapter's 40th Anniversary throughout 2009 with various events and reasons for brothers to send in money.

The first order of business is our Annual Meeting. This is scheduled for January 25th at 2pm. We will hold it at 525 North Walnut.

Tentative Agenda

Communications - Caduceus article; newsletter deadline and ship date
Fundraising - ACH goal for 2009 ($1500 / month); long term capital campaign
Summer Party - pick date and location for event
Executive Directors - Two go off, two come on. Let us know if you are interested.

We are also looking for ACH Cheerleaders from various pledge classes/pledge years. You should be able to give $1/month for every year since you've been out of school.

Here is an example of a feasible giving schedule (per month in US $).

We understand that ACH is not for everyone and it is sometimes easier to give an annual gift. Either way you give, we need your help to keep the house in good shape for this and future generations of Kappa Sigs.

What will this money go for? It will insure we can pay for the house even without renters (covering worst case scenario). Create a maintenance/repair/life cycling program to offset operational costs to the undergraduates. Start a rainy day fund. Supplement long term capital purchases like major renovations, purchasing of adjacent lot, and there is always the possibility of supplementing our endowments or creating more.

Please give us feedback on what you think of the blog, the site, the ACH and long term fundraising plans/ideas and anything else you want to tell us.

Our goal is to get our ACH monthly contributions to $1500 / month by the 2009 homecoming.

Good luck to all of you in 2009. I hope I can do my part to ensure that our apples of gold are still framed in silver...and we have a place to hang those frames for years to come.

Five days ago, I received an email from Mitch Wilson to update my information for an upcoming alumni directory. IHQ also issued a press release on the website to quell fears of identity theft.

Silent Auction: Plaque of 46 East Lawn

On July 28th 2008 five brothers visited 46 East Lawn after attending Leadership conference in Richmond VA. While at the University of Virginia they decided to bring back a piece of our Fraternity's History. They took several charcoal rubbings of the plaque above 46 East Lawn and now are auctioning one of them off. The rubbing is in an American Chestnut frame that was made by brother Horton. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Kappa Mu fund-raising committee.

For a long time I have wanted to bring the alumni a new site. Marty has kept the original site maintained and looking great for years. A couple of times, I considered forging an entirely new site. However, for most everyone that creates a website....you make it, you maintain it, you own it until death. Sounds exciting, right?

Well, a platform is FINALLY out there which gives me the confidence to forge the new site and still have some chance at passing it own as a maintainable, organic site that can grow and expand.

I can understand the novelty of creating your own page, adding links to things you like, rating your friends and ordering their importance etc etc...but I work on a computer all day and don't want to spend my free time making web pages. Do you think doctors go home and play operation? Guess it depends on what she looks like....

It all started with LinkedIn. It seemed harmless enough. The next thing you know, I am updating my "what are you working on" to read "coming up with interesting nuggets to feed all of you".

I signed up for a facebook account a while back to look at a code for concert tickets or something along those lines. And that's how it starts, you think to yourself.

I am not sure what happened, but about a week ago I started getting friend requests...it started with Brad Johnson, then one from Wade Munday (which is the reason I have a friend feed account ... a way to aggregate your ramblings it seems) ...now it is out of control and I start shaking if I don't twitter something witty every hour or so. You people know what kind of attention hound I am. So, now that I am drinking from the internet firehose ...let 'er rip. I should be as pointless and unproductive as everyone else momentarily.

I am also working on a personal site to aggregate my ramblings, microblurbs and associated what nottery. If you mess with me, I will dipity the hell out of every last one of you.

Nashville KSAA Meeting - Sun 10/19 4PM @ Sam's Place

This Sunday, 10/19 - 4pm @ Sam's Place in Hillsboro Village. We have the "VIP" Meeting Room that is upstairs...you have to get to it by slippery ladder, but once you are there you get the beefsteak and waffles. I will be there early to direct traffic.

The "agenda" is more of a laundry list of topics to cover. This is mostly to get our ducks in a row for HC and get the ball rolling on a few initiatives.

I know it is very short notice. This was a tentative get together until today. It in no way replaces the homecoming meeting. It only helps to grease the wheels so the homecoming meeting goes smooth. Feel free to pass this on to anyone else that may want to attend. I do understand of undergrads cannot make it due to having their own meeting that afternoon.

FOOTBALL CHAMPS!!!

Last night we won the intramural football championship, defeating FIJI 14-8 in a hard-fought battle. Overall we were 6-1 for the season. It was an awesome game! We had a great turnout of fans even though it was raining on and off. Our pledges painted up and brought plenty of noise-making instruments. The atmosphere was awesome!

Dear Brothers,

The tradition continues…the tradition of Kappa Sigma excellence at Middle Tennessee State University.

Brothers, do you know of an undergraduate student at MTSU who would make a good Kappa Sigma brother? Kappa Sigma representatives will be on campus in the coming weeks to begin the rush process, hand selecting the first 15-30 students to become part of the colony. Hooters Night

Tonight was Hooters Night in which we ate wings and got to talk to the guys a lot. We had a turn-out of 27, which was good but some afternoon rain affected our rush a little. Overall this week we have had over 40 guys sign in so we have plenty to choose from. Tomorrow is Formal night and then we will give the bids out so I will update the blog after we do so.

Tonight was Games and Giveaways night for rush. We had the SKOAL guys here giving out free dip as well as BRock 93.7 playing some music for us. We had an even better turn out than last night. I didnt get an exact count but I know we had at least 34 guys here. We are excited about the men we have to pick from. We expect even more tomorro night for our Hooters night, but I will let you know how that goes tomorrow night.

Tonight was the first night of Rush and things went well. We had a Margaritaville theme, and we grilled burgers and hot dogs and played some volleyball. We had 21 guys show up and, with the exception of only two, they were a strong group. We look forward to having a great week and getting the best guys on campus. Monday- Margaritaville Night- we will be grilling out and playing volleyball in honor of brother Jimmy Buffet.

Wednesday- Hooters Night- Self explanatory- Pretty girls serving wings.

Thursday- Formal Night- An invitation only night in which we explain our core values.

I have no doubts the brothers would appreciate any of our alumni dropping by during the week. I have asked Hunter to chime in throughout the week if he gets a chance. It is not like the GM is busy during rush week or anything.

Those who share joy, must also share pain

Golf tournaments and homecomings are great. There is so much fellowship throughout these events year after year. Each year, fresh and weathered faces sharing in times passed and times to come. While our brothers like conversations to be about the promotions, big fish or hole-in-one that almost was, a brother never walks away from another's troubles or hard times.

The college term is a volatile time in a person's development. It is a time when a child becomes an adult, whether they want to or not. You stop being a sponge and begin to mold what the person you will be for the rest of your life. It is also a time of your highest highs and lowest lows. While we like to focus on the good times, those times would not be as sweet were it not for the bitter. To share in your brother's joy, you must also share in his pain.

One of our brothers, Richard Hogg, and his family have had to live through a time of uncertainty one would not wish on his enemies, much less his brother. Richard and Kristi's daughter, Mayci Shea Hogg , has battled a Mitochondrial Disease for her entire life.

Dust off the old golf clubs

It is time again for the annual TTU Kappa Sigma Alumni association golf tournament. Once again we are back where it all started. Expect to see the usual cast of characters along with a few surprise appearances.

· Saturday June 28, 2008 – 8:00 AM Shotgun Start

· The White Plains Golf Course, Cookeville, Tennessee.

· Delightful BBQ lunch following the golf

· Entry Fee - $100 per player ($50 for students)

· An variety of magnificent prizes

· Summer Party – End of golf until departure on Sunday

There were numerous requests last year for an individual tournament in addition to the team event. So this year we are going to have an individual event the day before the team event on Friday June the 27^th. No entry fees (just pay for greens fee and cart for you)

A few changes for this year…

· First come first serve on starting hole selection. Team Driver (John Driver, David Loy, Jeff Sanders and Adrian Goad) have requested the hole immediately behind Beast man.

· Shortest drive contest on the same hole as the longest drive. I have personally witnessed some of the all time worst drives in the history of golf. It’s about time we start recognizing those amazing feats.

· Rumor has it that THROWS may return in place of mulligan’s this year. Unlike in years past they may NOT be used from the green thereby forcing actual throws. (Generally $5 a player)

· Net division winner in addition to the overall champion (so that even the worst of us can win)

Alumni Golf Tournament Memories…

HARMON Remembers…

I am not sure the year (Steve Young’s wife was having a baby) so Team Beast was on the prowl for a replacement. After an exhaustive search we settled on non other than J.D. Hoffman. We were assured by several sources that Huffman (despite being relatively new to the game) might be the missing link that would lead us back to the top where Beast belongs. J.D. arrived late of course and we dashed towards our assigned tee. As we arrived J.D. pulled out a branch new pair of golf shoes (still in the box). If nothing else at least he was going to look the part. At this point we became aware of how new to the game J.D. was. His golf game consisted of a brand new set still in the card board box with a hole cut in the top. So we strapped in his box / bag away we went. I am sure we came no where near winning that year. However there is no chance anyone had more fun than we did that day. We never ran out of cold beer and I am pretty sure J.D. explained to us how sausage was produced. To this day after playing golf for going on 30 year now it still ranks in the top 10 most enjoyable rounds I have ever played.

BEAST Remembers…

Then there was the inaugural event, in a team that featured Harmon, Beast, and Steve Potter. All was going well - Team Beast was in command of the tournament, and was looking like they were in line to take home the cup. The only mistake the team made all day was running out of beer after 15 holes. Potter decides to make the best of a bad situation by turning to his bottle of Scotch stashed away in his bag. Obviously 15 holes of golf, 90 degree temperatures, tons of beer and scotch do not mix. Team Beast made it through the last three holes with an increasingly ineffective and incoherent Steve Potter. As the scorecards were tallied and the delicious barbecue lunch was being consumed, Potter took it upon himself to satisfy his hunger with a several large spoonfuls of potato salad. Not your little plastic picnic spoon mind you, but the quite large serving spoon which the rest of us were using. Something in his drunken state did not sit well with him, or more likely, his wife, because Potter was not seen at the tournament for several years until making an appearance at last year's event.

In honor of Steve Potter, Chris Carson had suggested we create a cocktail whereby you take a couple of scoops of potato salad, put them in a cup, and pour the scotch over the potato salad, creating a most refreshing cocktail. Maybe that should be the traditional winning drink, not unlike the traditional bottle of milk served to the winner of the Indy 500.....

If any of you out there have memories to publish (Team Loy plays wrong tees, Team Loy throws ball into bunker, Beast hits own teammate, etc) send them my way and we will compile them somewhere on the alumni web site.

As we stuck address labels to the freshly folded spring 2008 newsletters, I noticed many of our brothers still have the same address they used when initiated. Instead of a long "update your address" spiel, part of me hopes that our newsletter is the reason you make it back to your hometown a couple of times a year.

Yeah, there is finally a comment. Someone is reading this. Now that I know I have an audience (Good afternoon, Blake), I am even more excited.

Newsletter will be in the mail this week(end). Got them hot off the presses yesterday.

Earlier this week, nationals sent a letter to all brothers asking to update their information. I responded to their letter saying "hey, why doesn't nationals let alumni and undergrads access their chapter's brother info to keep all the data in one place?" I even stated an annual fee to access this service should cover the costs. Say $10 per 500 or 1000 brothers. As of today, I have received no response.

I am not going to ramble about data integrity and islands of information to make me feel better about the student loans I am still paying, but here is the cliff note version:
"Keeping data in more than one place almost always results in disagreeing data"

So, since IHQ will not acknowledge my existence, here you go:

Leadership Conference - Conclave Light

Perusing the national website, I saw the registration area for this year's Leadership Conference. While it does not have the glitz or formality of the Biennial Conclaves, it can still be a great time of fellowship, leadership and best of all ROAD TRIP. I mean, a great time to prepare for the upcoming semester (...and ROAD TRIP).

The year before the Memphis Conclave, the Leadership Conference was held at the University of Illinois - Champaign campus. Thanks to Patrick Brown-nosing, we managed commandeer a TTU van for the weekend. Though we had a great time hanging out and spending time with brothers throughout our district, Leadership Conference serves a bigger purpose (but the ROAD TRIP is still awesome).

That bigger purpose is getting back into the fraternity management frame of mind. Recruitment, dues, filling the house up, getting back into classes (oh yeah, scholarship), etc. Leadership Conference is a few days to get you excited and revitalized about how to approach the coming year, network with area brothers and get access and prepped for the upcoming recruitment season.

Recruitment is 365 days a year...but everything ebbs and flows. Leadership Conference is a great way to get positive momentum towards another great fall rush.

FORE!!! - 11th Annual KSAA Tournament - 1st Inidvidual

Wow, has it been 11 years? I would not know because I was not there until fall of 1999, but I will take your word for it. Kevin and Beast have done it again. This year will also mark the first year of an individual tournament to be played on Friday June 27th. Keep looking here for details. All brothers that used to be good can show up on Saturday and say they could not get off work but assure us how good they would have done. I plan to be there and play horribly. I am sure handicap will be taken into account (I propose Handicap + 1 stroke/beer. With an 18 handicap and a 12 pack, I could shoot in the ...I'd probably still could not break 90).

Ok, kids...I am going to turn off comment moderation.

Kappa Sigma Ink

I was initiated January 15, 2000. A year later when the fall 2000 class was initiated, I went to Lone Wolf on 21st Ave with Patrick Brown and had the artist place the Star and Crescent where I would see it everyday. It is still the only tat I have. Though I have never said I would get another one, I will never have one that means as much as this one. It has served as a "Hey, man are you a Kappa Sig?" to uncomfortable looks (I assume the pentagram bothers ignorant people), but most importantly it reminds me daily of how I should live my life.

It is not for everyone, but I know a few I followed and more that came after me.

Alumni Skeet Shooting Tournament

Brothers,

The chapter will be hosting the first Alumni Skeet Shooting event April the 12 as a fund raiser. Lunch will be served at eleven o'clock at the house then we will head out to Bend of the River where the tournament will be held. There is a twenty dollar entry fee. Be sure to bring your own gun, shells, earplugs, and shooting glasses. We hope this will give everyone a chance to meet the newly initiated brothers.

Please get in contact with me by phone or email and let me know if you will be able to make it or not so we have an idea of how many people to expect. Also, if you have any questions concerning the tournament, do not hesitate to call me.

Brothers,

I just wanted to let you know that on the 30th of last month the chapter initiated 7 outstanding young men. This brings us to 56 active brothers who remain very close. The last person initiated on that day was the 560th man to come through Kappa Mu.

Also, just to keep you informed, the chapter has already elected its officers for the next year. they are...

Housing Sponsorship

Brothers,

I just wanted to extend a thankyou on behalf of the undergrads to everyone who has participated in the housing sponsorship program. Thanks to you we were able to purchase two new washers for the house and a load of new paint to cover the walls.

Anarchy in April

On April 14th, the chapter will be having the Cow Drop fundraiser during the day, tickets are $5 each this year.

That afternoon there will be a Brothers vs.. Alumni softball game / tourney. I have been asked to pass this along and try to put a team together so if you or anyone else is interested please let me know.

The Anarchy party will happen later that night and features Camp Normal to Rock Your Face Off

What is a Cow Drop? Glad I put words in your mouth. Here is the gist. A fenced off square is broken into squares based on the number of purchased tickets. A well feed bovine enters the pen and runs around. When the cow squirts his magic chocolate sauce, the person that purchased the square gets the prize money... and the rest is donated to the chapter. The prize money depends on the number of purchased tickets.

Nashville Town Meeting

Dan Johnson is going to host a Nashville Town meeting on Friday February 23 from 7 - 11 ish at his house. I will send out an email to all local alums, but I wanted to get the message out.

The meeting went great. I am waiting on feedback about posting the minutes on the site.

The EC remains the same. The two new members at large are Matt Campagni and Thomas Siever.

2007 Chapter Update

This past year has been a momentous one for our chapter. In 2006 we initiated 20 outstanding young men and have received two awards from Nationals for our level of proficiency in the entire fraternity! I hope this is an Indication of how strong our brotherhood remains.

We begin this year with 51 active members and look forward to spring rush. I would like express how much fun the undergraduates had during homecoming and thank everyone who was able to stop by. I look forward to seeing everyone again during the alumni golf tournament this summer.

I would also like to remind you about our philanthropy which is “Anarchy in April”. It will be in the first week of April and corresponds with our Cow Drop Fundraiser. Tickets are only 5 dollars this year and the prizes really are awesome. Let me know if you need tickets when the time comes.

2007...where did you come from?

It is already 2007. This will be the year of renewed communcation between our chapter and the alumni association. It has to be to ensure the success of our brotherhood.

Here are the first impelmentations to this communciation:

With sites like Flickr, Blogger, MySpace, etc., there are a multitude of ways to communicate other than email. Email collaboration breaks down above 5 people, and I hope we are going to have much more than that participating.

So, here is what I as the current secretary need to know:

What is your preffered way to get updates and how often should you get them?
Would you rather get a link to a post that facilitates comments or take the chance of reply alls on work and home emails?
Do you think 2 mailings a year (1 for summer party and 1 for homecoming) is not enough, sufficient, or too much?

Early Adopter strikes again.

I have been utilizing blogs at work to communicate between team members seperated by schedule and geography. This is an exteremly powerful tool. I will add the Alumni Association EC so they can post any upcoming information and it should all be available at http://ttukappasigma.blogspot.com

The best part about it is that instead of being a newsletter type format... where one person collects and distributes information. This lays the foundation for a much more communal site. It is no longer the site that Marty updates when he can get the other alum off their butts. It is your site.

I will maintain the blog through blogger.com and have its engine post it to our website when we move the hosting to Solutions IT Consulting. This gives us the privacy that only people visiting our site will have access to it.

If you want to get fancy (or if you are lazy like me), you can check out RSS feeds and aggregators. That way you do not have to check all the time, you can be notified when a new post is made.

Check back soon. As soon as Marty, David, Dan, Lynn, and myself get the ball rolling posting information and upcoming events, we will find out more is going on that we ever new. The site's success depends on both us adding upcoming events and you commenting, notifying, and participating. If this shows the increase in communication between the alumni (with ourselves) and the undergrads, I will work with them to establish one of their one of their own and teach someone enough to teach a pledge each semester.
